AZBros Armory: Fire Power-up (Contra)

Welcome back to the AZBros Armory! Let’s see, what kind of dangerous item shall I show you this time? Ah, here’s a good one, the Fire Power-up from the Contra series. This should be useful, right? Well, you never know until you try it out! How about we take this powerup to the shooting range and see its potential. I’ll show you what makes the Fire Power-up so great. But be warned, there may be some cases where this upgrade will cause you more trouble than it’s worth. There’s no need to worry though, here at the AZBros Armory we make sure you know all there is to know about our weapons. That way, you’ll be fully prepared the next time you encounter them. Are you ready to play with fire? Well, I sure am, so let’s get started!

The Fire Power-up has appeared in every Contra game I can think of. And believe it or not, it has changed pretty drastically throughout the series. Especially the first three games: Contra (NES), Super C (NES) and Contra 3: Alien Wars (SNES). These will be the three variations of fire that I will be discussing in this edition of the AZBros Armory.

Contra (NES)

fire, contra 1

The Fire Power-up in the first Contra game moves in a circular motion and is really not that powerful.

When to grab it: If you only have the standard weapon, then go ahead and grab it. The fire seems to be just as powerful but it covers more space due to the way it moves.

When to avoid it: Avoid fire if you have any other power-up, especially the spread. In this game, your goal is to get the spread and keep the spread, it is by far the best power-up. So, once you obtain it, make sure you avoid fire at all costs. There’s nothing worse than having a good powerup, then have it taken away by accidentally grabbing fire.

Super C (NES)

why

It’s a moderate sized fireball that moves pretty fast. Once it makes contact with something, it explodes, shooting deadly fire out in different directions covering lots of space.

When to grab it: The Fire Power-up in Super C is one of the better ones. In my opinion, it’s second best in the game, right after spread of course. So, keeping that in mind, if you don’t have the spread, definitely pick up fire if you can. It is definitely a very useful alternative.

When to avoid it: Only time to avoid it is if you have the spread. But honestly, some people may prefer fire in this game over spread. So it’s really up to you, take whichever one you prefer.

Contra 3: Alien Wars (SNES)

contra 3 fire

In Contra 3 the Fire Power-up is a flamethrower. Yeah that’s right, it’s about time! Seems like an obvious choice if you want a weapon that shoots out fire. Anyways, you can hold down the button and fire will continue to spew out. It only covers a short range so you’ll have to move in on your opponents to make good use of this variation. It can be very powerful against bosses if you’re able to hold it on them for a while.

When to grab it: I’ll leave this one up to you, if you like the feel of fire in this game then grab it whenever you can. I personally still prefer spread, but I think that fire in Contra 3 can be just as good if not better than spread, depending on how you use it, of course. Spread is better for long range, fire is better up close, go with whatever fits your playstyle better.

When to avoid it: Once again, it’s up to you. If you like a long range playstyle and don’t like the fact that the flamethrower causes you to get in close, then avoid it.

So there you have it, three different Fire Power-ups to choose from. Which one is your favorite? Or maybe you like them all?…. Hate them all? Well, whatever the case may be, the Fire Power-up is a classic in the Contra series. So, whether you love it or hate it, fire will always be there. And always keep in mind, even if fire isn’t the best, at the end of the day its your choice if you want to use this upgrade or not. If you like it over the spread or other power-ups, then go ahead and grab it. As long as your having fun, you can pick up whatever power-up suits you best. But as for me, well, I’ll always live and die by the spread.

Thank you once again for stopping by the AZBros Armory. I hope you enjoyed your time here, and hopefully you learned a few new things. I've played video games pretty much my whole life. And I'd say I love them just as much now as I did back then. I really enjoy fighting games and I'm always looking for new ones to try. I really like the competitiveness of fighters, and love testing my skills against other players. However, I also like to just sit back and relax with more casual games, too.
