Nintendo Switch OFFICIALLY Announced; Releasing in March 2017
In case you missed the Nintendo
NX Switch reveal trailer, here it is:
As seen in the trailer, many of the rumors about Nintendo’s next home console appear to true. The console will consist of a tablet that has detachable controllers that slide onto each side of the screen. Both controllers also function similar to a Wiimote when held separately. Something new introduced in the trailer is the ability for the detachable controllers to slide onto another piece, thus resembling a standard gaming controller.
While we’re talking about the new controller, it’s a good time to mention there will be a standalone controller that resembles a standard gaming controller. Interestingly, while the Switch‘s detachable controller will have no traditional d-pad, the standalone pad will.
Let’s talk a little about the games shown. The trailer opens with a shot of a man playing the new Zelda: Breath of the Wild on his Switch. Later in the trailer, we see gameplay of an NBA game, Mario Kart, Splatoon and what appears to be a new 3D Mario game! But wait…. I said there was a Mario Kart game, but it wasn’t exactly Mario Kart 8. Check out the image below.
At first glance, this looks a lot like Mario Kart 8. But upon further inspection, you’ll notice many differences. First of all… KING BOO! King Boo is not a playable character in Mario Kart 8. Also, the screenshot shows the players holding two items. Mario, for example, is holding a Mushroom but also seems to have one as a backup in his item inventory. Could this be Mario Kart 9? Or possibly a Switch update for Mario Kart 8? If so, could this mean other popular Wii U games will receive Switch updates such as Splatoon, Mario Maker and Smash Bros?
Finally, we get our first glimpse of the new 3D Super Mario game. The game looks to be similar to recent 3D Mario titles such as Sunshine and Galaxy. No title was given for the new game, but we get a few seconds of awesome looking gameplay. Could this be a launch title? It’s been a long time since a brand new Nintendo console launched with a main series, 3D Mario title.
So there you have it, the Nintendo Switch! What do you think? Did it live up to your expectations? What are you most excited about for the new console? Anything really disappoint you? Let us know! Also, stay tuned to AZBros.com for more Switch news, information and analysis.
Update: Below is the official press release from Nintendo regarding the Switch.
In an introductory video released today (http://www.nintendo.com/switch), Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.
At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.
Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.
“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”
