Nintendo Direct: Several Huge New 3DS Titles Announced

During this morning’s brand new 3DS-only Nintendo Direct, many brand new titles were revealed.  While most people were disappointed this Direct would focus on 3DS content rather than an NX reveal, the presentation was actually quite buzzworthy.

The Direct started out with some Pokemon Sun and Moon news.  Details about Z-Crystals was discussed as well as a few new Alola forms.  Check out the video below:

Next came the first major shocker of the Direct… SUPER MARIO MAKER FOR 3DS!  No one expected this, but it shouldn’t be a huge surprise.  Mario Maker has been one of Nintendo’s most successful games and is a perfect fit for their handheld system.  It was a matter of when, not if, Mario Maker was 3DS bound.

Before you get too excited, it must be noted this will not be an exact port of Mario Maker.  In fact, the 3DS version will be somewhat limited compared to the Wii U version.  Those limitations include some Wii U courses not being compatible, no Mystery Mushroom costumes, no option of searching courses via ID and no way to upload courses online.  Yeah… that kind of defeats the major appeal of Mario Maker, right?

The game does include some exclusive content such as sharing levels locally and via Street Pass, the ability to collaboratively design courses locally as well as 100 unique Nintendo created levels.  These levels also include “Medal Challenges”.  Medal Challenges contain objectives such as collecting every coin in a level or defeating every enemy.  Hopefully these features find their way onto the Wii U at some point, but that’s probably doubtful.  Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS will be released on December 2nd.

Another game that came out of left field was a 3DS version of Yoshi’s Wooly World.  This new game, titled Poochy and Yoshi’s Wooly World, will include every level from its Wii U counterpart as well as new features and levels based around Poochy.  Exclusive to this version are Poochy Pups!  They are exactly what you’d expect: miniature Poochy puppies that follow Yoshi around.  These little guys will alert you to potential secrets and collectibles.  The 3DS game will also include 30 stop-action animated shorts featuring yarn Yoshi and Poochy (produced by dwarf Animation Studio).  Poochy and Yoshi’s Wooly World for Nintendo 3DS will be released on February 3, 2017!

The final game revealed was possibly the biggest surprise… PIKMIN FOR 3DS!  That’s right, folks, Olimar and his Pikmin pals will be heading to a 3DS near you sometime in 2017.  This new Pikmin adventure will be a side-scrolling game.   While it may not be a traditional Pikmin game, many of the key features of the Pikmin series will be present.  Using the stylus to tap the touch screen will indicate where Olimar tosses the Pikmin.  Pikmin assist Olimar in completing tasks such as moving objects and defeating enemies.  Pikmin colors will still determine their unique properties (for instance, red Pikmin are resistant to fire).  This new Pikmin will be very action oriented.

Other titles shown during the Direct include Mario Party Star Rush, TANK TROOPERS, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice, DragonQuest VII and VIII, Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice and Mario Sports Superstars.  If you missed the Direct, you can watch it in its entirety below:
