Mario Kart 8 DELUXE Confirmed for Switch; Available on 4/28!
Noticeably absent (in an official capacity) from Nintendo’s live stage presentation for the Switch was Mario Kart 8. Lots of short clips were shown, but no trailer. Well… not so fast (see what I did there?). After the stream, Nintendo released the official Mario Kart 8 DELUXE trailer on YouTube. Check it out!
First and foremost, the game will be available on April 28, 2017.
So what’s new in this Deluxe version? Well, for starters, classic Battle Mode is back and looking better than ever. Also, as we already knew, you’ll now be able to hold 2 items while racing. New characters were confirmed when we saw King Boo, but now we know he’s not the only new/returning character. Shown in the trailer above were also Dry Bones, Bowser Jr. (along with his trusty Clown Cart) and…. INKLINGS! Yep, the Inklings will be making their Mario Kart debut.
Along with Inklings, we’ll also be getting a Splatoon Battle Mode arena (as well as some other cool, new classic Battle Mode arenas). Want more new stuff? Okay! Returning items include the Feather from Super Mario Kart, which gives up the ability to jump high and the Boo which will turn you invisible! The Boo item used to also steal an item, but that wasn’t shown in the trailer, so no word yet whether it’ll still work that way or not. But what about Fake Item Blocks? There was an odd looking item block shown in the trailer, but the question mark was not upside down. Guess we’ll see if they show anything else during tomorrow’s Treehouse Live.
Update: Here’s the official press release for the game…
With Nintendo Switch, fans can enjoy the definitive version of Mario Kart 8 anywhere, anytime, even with up to 8 friends in local wireless multiplayer. All your favourite tracks and characters return from the Wii U version, plus all DLC tracks and characters, and new characters join the roster, too: Inkling Boy and Inkling Girl from Splatoon, King Boo, Dry Bones, and Bowser Jr.! Plus, battle Mode has been revamped and includes Balloon Battle and Bob-omb Blast, with all-new courses such as Urchin Underpass and Battle Stadium, and returning ones like (GCN) Luigi’s Mansion and (SNES) Battle Course 1. Players can now carry two items at a time, including new items returning from previous Mario Kart games such as Boo, the item-stealing ghost, and the Feather, which gives you a high jump in battle mode. Players can even choose to use a new Smart Steering feature which makes driving and staying on the track easy for novice players and kids, even at 200cc. Play in TV mode in up to 1080p.
