Main Course: One-Screen “Pokemon” (by Achilles)
Mario Maker features an almost infinite amount of level designs. You’ve seen the nearly impossible courses and the courses that basically play by themselves. There are courses that seem like they’ll never end and there are courses that fit nicely in a single screen. Most single screen courses are puzzle themed: you need to accomplish several small tasks in a specific order to complete the course. But what if you took standard course objectives and simply fit them into one-screen? How about 3 of these mini-courses to enjoy? Oh, did I mentioned they’re also Pokemon themed? You look like you’re ready to sink your teeth into the Main Course!
This Main Course is quite different from what we normally feature. Typically, a Main Course consists of one course. This time, we’ll be featuring 3 courses. Insanity, right? Not exactly. These courses are very small. Also, there’s a theme. Allow me to explain…
If you’ve ever played a Pokemon game, you know that your quest begins by choosing your starter. Every game features a Grass type, Fire type and Water type Pokemon to choose from. Each comes with a unique set of strengths and weaknesses and can ultimately shape your adventure.
The three courses featured are all uniquely based on the original Pokemon game’s starters: Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle. This trio of courses was chosen as a Main Course because it highlights what can be done in a very small amount of space. Each course is contained within a single screen (what you see is what you get; there’s no scrolling or warping elsewhere). Though small, there’s a lot to do in each course. As mentioned above, one-screen courses aren’t anything new. That said, the vast majority of one-screeners are puzzles. These three courses are all extremely straight-forward with little to no puzzle elements present. Think of them as traditional levels shrunk down to the smallest possible dimensions.
You’re still probably curious why we decided to feature three courses. Not only is this a true “set,” but the combined time it takes to complete all three is the average time it takes to complete a standard course. Also, all three courses play entirely different while staying true to the Pokemon starter featured in them. Bulbasaur’s course is grass themed, Charmander’s is fire themed and Squirtle’s is… you guessed it… water themed. Very cool!
